ZAP stands for Zero Air Pollution

Only 13% of the CO2 emitted by an obsolete fossil-fuel car.

This is the first Port Townsend EcoVillage car, and since she has 3 wheels, she is really an electric with motorcycle plates, insurance and front of the ferry line privileges.

Top Speed: 40 miles an hour
Range: 25-30 miles
Price new: About $10,000

Cost of running the ZAP:
It takes about 4-5 Kw hours to recharge the ZAP and at $.08 per Kwh, a recharge would cost about $.36. If we get about 30 miles on a charge, the cost would be $.012 per mile traveled. If gas costs $3.00 per gallon and you got 30 miles to the gallon, the cost in gas alone would be $.10 per mile, at least 8 times more expensive.

CO2 savings:
If we consider that our electricity is half from hydropower, 1Kwh would produce about .5 pounds of CO2, and a full recharge about 2.25 pounds, or .075 pounds of CO2 per mile traveled.A gas car that gets 20 miles to the gallon emits about 1 pound of CO2 per mile. The ZAP will thus produce about 7.5% of the CO2 produced by the gas car for the same distance traveled.

Cost of maintaining the ZAP:
The batteries in the ZAP may last 3 years and may cost $200 each to replace, times 6 batteries, or $400 per year. Other maintenance should be minimal, less than $100 per year.

Insuring the ZAP:
Progressive Insurance, $374 per year
